I am a Professor in Behavioral Medicine—which allows me to focus on both the physiological and psychological determinants of health behavior. In general, my research and teaching explore why and how people initiate and maintain healthy behaviors, with focus on healthy eating, physical activity, and body weight control—“medication adherence, when lifestyle is the medicine.”

Ancient Christianity & Health

In general, I am fascinated with the role religion plays in health and lmedicine, and how religion shapes health behavior—a theology of health, so to speak. More specifically, I focus on the understanding of ancient Christianity on physical, mental, and spiritual health.

As a guide to understand health behavior, self-control, and gluttony, we have been handed down great wisdom through those who have come before us—from the authors of the Scriptures, to the disciples of the Apostles, and the ascetics who followed. Central to this understanding is the “flesh” (sarx, σάρξ)—referring to the mortal, passionate or impassioned condition of human nature from which the carnal passions arise.

Health & Fitness Myths

The health, nutrition, and fitness industries are plagued with products, concepts, and theories that can be mythical, fallacious, and downright deceitful. If we take these claims as truth, they can begin to shape our viewpoints, decisions and behavior, potentially hindering our adoption of a long-term, healthy lifestyle. In response, I created a free website dedicated to debunking health, nutrition, and fitness myths with research—fitnesspudding.com.
